MOTION CAPTURE LAB CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING
April 14th, 2005

The University of Texas at Dallas Motion Capture Lab is now officially open and fully operational. The staff and students of the University may have noticed a hullabaloo surrounding the HRA building last Thursday. Banners went up, signs pointed the way, and inside a mass of people experienced what it is like to run a motion capture lab and the potential uses of such amazing technology.

At the sign-in table, guests were asked to sign the guestbook, starting what hopes to be a very long list of people interested in the University lab. Throughout the building, directors, professors, and students milled about answering questions regarding the lab's purpose and technology.

Inside the regular classrooms, students gave presentations of past work, including film, animation, games, and motion capture tests. Down the hall in the motion capture studio, student actors were dressed in special suits with reflectors, allowing passer-by's to witness the capture process. In the control room, guests were explained the process of applying motion data to obtain useful results; for example, using the data to move a 3D model of a character or archiving motions for medical comparison.

Dr. Thomas Linehan, director of the Art and Technology program, and Computer Science Professor, Dr. Balakrishnan Prabhakaran, co-direct the lab, symbolizing the marriage of art and technology. The University of Texas at Dallas Motion Capture is a collaboration of the School of Arts and Humanities and the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. Read more
